RWI at Ebor Gardens

 

What is RWI?

RWI is an abbreviation for Read Write Inc. RWI is a phonics complete literacy programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.

5 main Principles

Five key principles underpin the teaching in all Read Write Inc. sessions:

Purpose – know the purpose of every activity and share it with the children, so they know the one thing they should be thinking about

Participation – ensure every child participates throughout the lesson. Partnership work is fundamental to learning

Praise – ensure children are praised for effort and learning, not ability

Pace – teach at an effective pace and devote every moment to teaching and learning

Passion – be passionate about teaching so children can be engaged emotionally.

When using RWI to read the children will: learn:

Order Of teachings

 Set 1

Children will taught set 1 sound first. We do not teach later names at this stage. Order of set 1 sounds taught are :-m,a,s,d,t,I,n,g,o,c,k,u,b,fe,e,l,h,sh,r,j,v,y,w,th,z,ch,qu,x,ng,nk.

The sounds are taught in specific order. (Order of sounds and rhymes in useful documents below)

Additionally these sounds are taught with lovely images to reflect the rhymes that are taught with the sounds. This is done to secure the child’s understating of the sound that the letter being taught makes.

Set 2

Order of teaching set 2 sounds
