Curriculum Information – Spring Term 2020

Our class book this half term is “You’re a bad man Mr Gum” by Andy Stanton. We also have many other titles by this author in our class libraries so the children can enjoy his other stories at home.

In our writing sessions we will be focusing on apostrophes, adverbials and pronouns while we write three different alternative fairy tales based on Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella. It would be great if the children could read the originals at home.

We will continue to teach the children to spell common exception words while improving their reading and spelling during phonics lessons.

In maths this half-term we will focus on multiplication and division, so knowing as many times table facts as quickly as possible is very important. Please support your child to learn both multiplication and division facts at home. E.g. 3 x 4 = 12, 12 ÷ 4 = 3 or 12 ÷ 3 = 4. There will be many opportunities for the children to apply their knowledge in problem solving and reasoning questions and we will also support their development of arithmetic skills in daily sessions after lunch.

This half term the topic is Natural Disasters and the children will be especially learning about Volcanoes. Additionally, they will produce artwork inspired by volcanoes using various techniques which we are sure will look fantastic. The children will learn about what a volcano is and where they are in the world, what happens when a volcano erupts, the features of volcanoes, what tectonic plates are and what the ‘ring of fire’ is, they will explore life in volcanic areas and will compare a volcanic area to a non-volcanic area. Perhaps they would like to research other natural disasters at home.

In RE pupils will understand what Christians believe about a good life. In addition to this they will also investigate how the 5 pillars guide Muslims.

This half term the P.S.H.E. unit is ‘Dreams and Goals’. They will think about their own hopes and dreams and how to achieve them. In addition, to develop the mental wellbeing of the children, they will discuss how to overcome the disappointment of a broken dream.

P.E. lessons are on Monday afternoons. Children must bring in a P.E. kit consisting of tracksuit bottoms, leggings or shorts, a t-shirt and plimsolls or trainers. Please make sure all items are labelled with your child’s name.

There will be no swimming this term.

Homework will be sent out on a Friday to be returned by the following Thursday.  Please support your child to complete this.

Continuing reading

Children must read at home every night. They should read for at least twenty minutes. A record of what has been read should be recorded in each child’s planner. We ask parents to sign this weekly and make sure children are bringing in their reading books and planners each day so that they can be checked and changed by the class teacher.
